Ans: In 2023, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE were top Basmati rice importers from India. Iran imported over 1.1 million tonnes, while Saudi Arabia bought around 950,000 tonnes. The UK, USA, and Yemen are also major markets. Middle East and Europe dominate global Basmati demand.
Ans: India is the world’s largest rice exporter, with exports crossing 22 million tonnes in FY 2023–24. This includes both Basmati (4.9 million tonnes) and Non-Basmati rice (17.1 million tonnes). Vietnam, Thailand, and Pakistan follow India globally in rice exports. India holds over 40% global market share.
Ans: As of 2024, white non-basmati rice and broken rice are under export restrictions. This affects about 25% of India’s total rice shipments. The government imposed curbs to control domestic inflation. However, Basmati and parboiled rice exports are still permitted with specific MEP conditions.
